The registrations and licences required by a Kenyan company or business depend on its activities, sector, location and workforce. Common requirements include the following.
Single Business Permit (Unified Business Permit)
This licence permits a business, trade, profession or occupation to be conducted within the relevant county. It is ordinarily renewed annually.
Personal Identification Number registration
Employers and employees are required to register with the Kenya Revenue Authority for applicable tax purposes.
Social Health Authority (SHA)
Employers must register with the Social Health Authority and remit the applicable statutory contributions under the social health insurance framework.
National Social Security Fund (NSSF)
Employers are required to register with the National Social Security Fund when they engage employees and to meet the applicable contribution obligations.
Occupational safety and health registration
A workplace may require registration with the Directorate of Occupational Safety and Health Services under the Occupational Safety and Health Act, 2007.
Higher Education Loans Board (HELB)
An employer may require registration for Higher Education Loans Board compliance purposes.
Industrial Training Levy
An employer may be required to register with the National Industrial Training Authority and meet applicable levy obligations.
